Founding Principal Engineer

At Ezra, we're on a mission to empower hourly workers: helping them build emergency savings directly from payroll, and receive matching contributions from their employers. Founded by two former Googlers and backed by Better Tomorrow Ventures, we’re building a world in which every American has financial security and every company has a productive and engaged workforce. Come join us!

What you’ll do:

You’ll be our first full-time hire, joining two cofounders and 2 part-time engineering contractors. As the lead engineer on the platform, you'll spend most of your time building Ezra. You’ll also work directly with customers to land our first few implementations and guide the team in designing sustainable, secure architecture and standing up stage-appropriate best practice development processes.

→ [65%] IC Engineering

  • Lead the charge in building Ezra's platform. We currently use Next.js/React on Vercel with Postgres, and have 3P API integrations to HRIS and banking systems.

  • Your immediate focus will be building on an existing codebase to support a roadmap of features for employer-integrated emergency savings accounts. In the coming months, we’ll broaden our focus to other services for our members.

→ [20%] Integration Support:

  • Alongside the cofounders, onboard our initial customers - including design partners (top universities in the Bay) and our first larger (6k+ employee) customers.

  • Answer technical questions, root cause and remediate issues that arise during and after implementation, and help keep our customers happy.

→ [15%] Technical Leadership

  • Make opinionated decisions about architecture to ensure Ezra is built on a scalable and reliable technical foundation, including decisions about when to build vs buy.

  • Design stage-appropriate development best practices, rallying the team around them to drive momentum and quality.

  • Spearhead efforts to establish observability, reliability, and security best practices, including achieving SOC2/Type 2 compliance.

You might be a good fit if you:

  • A seasoned full-stack software engineer with 8+ years of diverse experience. You’ve built from the ground up at startups and taken a turn at a larger enterprise - so you can build in ways that keep us moving today but won’t inhibit scale tomorrow. You've seen build-vs-buy play out so you know when to do which.

  • Confident in cloud-driven backend development, and you have experience with responsive web frontend technologies. Previous experience with API integrations is a big plus; fintech experience is nice, but not required.

  • Some leadership experience (ideally managing small teams) and opinions about how you think great organizations are run - but are still looking to get your hands in code every day to build.

  • Excited by working with a small, dedicated, and fun-loving team to create financial prosperity for all.

  • Eligible to work in the US, and can be in-person in San Francisco 3+ days/week.

Who you’ll work with, and what we value:

Cofounders Dash and Micah met at Google many years ago and became fast friends. They left jobs in tech and finance to work on Ezra full-time.

Ezra is building for the long haul. We value:

  • Morality: we’re small but mighty, we do things the right way, we’re building a solid foundation

  • Humble grit: we’re politely relentless and really, really, care

  • Humor: life is too short not to have fun along the way

  • Taking intelligent risks: focus on first principles, simple is not simplistic, we learn from failure

  • Balance: we’re running a marathon of sprints, and time to rejuvenate helps us do our best work
